Scaffolding in Guildford

Guildford is Surrey's largest town and one of the most architecturally significant in the South East. The cobbled High Street runs down to the River Wey through a streetscape that includes medieval, Georgian, and Victorian buildings, some of them listed and all of them in a designated conservation area. The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on Stag Hill, completed in 1961, and the University of Surrey campus immediately below it form a major institutional presence on the western side of the town. Residential Guildford ranges from Georgian townhouses in the old town to large Edwardian and interwar villas in Onslow Village and Merrow, and more recent private estate housing in Burpham and Park Barn. Surrey has over 200 designated conservation areas, and Guildford has one of the highest densities of listed buildings in the county. Guildford’s commercial work divides between the historic town centre and everything around it. The High Street and the streets off it are largely listed or within the conservation area, which means a shopfront scaffold needs a tie method agreed in advance and a footway licence from the borough, and it needs to let the unit keep trading underneath. A pavement gantry does that where a standard frontage scaffold would not.

Away from the centre the work is offices, light industrial and the business parks, where the scaffold is driven by loading and by the building staying in use. Facade repairs, window replacement and cladding inspection all need a tied scaffold with a design behind it, and most main contractors will ask for that design, the RAMS and the method statement before we are through the gate. We bring all three to the first visit.

Whatever the building, the scaffold is inspected through the hire rather than signed off once at handover, and the handover certificate comes when it is ready to use.
